A new wave of fish packaging is emerging, fueled by innovations in fish biology, technology and manufacturing.
Here are five of our favorites.
FishBuddy FishBuddies, an online fish delivery service that ships fish to homes, grocery stores and restaurants in New York, is based in California.
They make their own packaging, based on the technology developed by the Center for Biodiversity Innovation at the University of California at Davis, which uses microorganisms to create a flexible, odorless and tasteless packaging material.
Fish Buddy says the technology has the potential to deliver more than 30 percent more fish to consumers, and that it’s the only way to save a fish farm or a fishery.
Fish Buddies also offers customized packages, including customized fish packages that include a “drum roll” option to deliver fresh fish to a home or restaurant in one minute.
The company plans to expand to other cities in the next year or two.
Fresh Market Fresh Market, a startup based in Austin, Texas, has been developing packaging systems for more than two decades, with a focus on fish and other fish products.
FreshMarket, which sells to retail and wholesale distributors, was the first to offer fish packages in the United States, in 1998.
Since then, they have expanded into other seafood products and have expanded to ship more than 2.5 million pounds of fish annually, according to the company.
Frito Pita, a food service company based in Irvine, Calif., has been focused on packaging for over 30 years.
Its packaging was named the world’s best by Consumer Reports magazine in 2006.
The food service business has expanded to include delivery services and a number of restaurants and grocery stores, according, to the New York Times.
FreshPita also makes a product called Frito-Pita Punch, which it uses to package fish.
Fritos for the World Fritas for the world, a popular Mexican food in Europe, has focused on creating fish packages for more people, says co-founder Michael Lutz.
In fact, the company offers a free fish package every Friday, and the Frits for theWorld team is also working with the FDA to improve the fish-package labeling requirements of its product.
Ketchup and Lime Ketchup is the only sauce that is made in-house in California, and it is made from locally sourced ingredients, according the company’s website.
