It was the kind of story that you would expect from a franchise that has been around for decades, but it’s also a story that the NHL has had to work with.
“We’re talking to a bunch of different players and trying to make sure we have the best product that we can,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said.
“We’re working with a bunch people who work in the packaging industry, we’re working on packaging for the game, we’ve been working with packaging manufacturers for years and years.”
Bettman said the league will start offering the new packaging this week and expects to launch it in mid-December.
He said he’s not sure when it will go on sale in the United States.
The NHL will also have the NHLPA on board, which is hoping to sell the new plastic to fans and retailers.
It will not sell the plastic itself, but Bettman believes it will help make it available to NHL teams.
“You have to be prepared to make some money for the teams,” he said.
“It’s a great way to support the game.”
The NHLPA is not yet ready to offer the plastic for sale, but said it is looking into options.
“Our team is very focused on helping them sell the product to fans,” a representative said.
